Topo Survey/Mapping

Topo Survey/Mapping

A Topographic Survey (Topo Survey) is a land survey that focuses on the elevations of all natural and manmade features on a land parcel or roadway. The object of this type of survey is to measure, map and locate buildings, improvements, roadways, streams, etc. as well as existing ground elevations, contours, and drainage patterns. All vertical measurements and elevations will be referenced to a specific vertical datum as specified by a government agency or project engineer.

Most Topographic Surveys are performed for the development of vacant land, roadway projects or for re-development projects; and it may be necessary to show boundary lines, easements, restrictions, and individual trees, as well as the rim and invert elevations of underground utilities. Furthermore, additional items such as wetland stakes and soil borings may be needed for an accurate and complete “Existing Conditions Survey”.

For larger projects, including the mapping of utility corridors, aerial photography and photogrammetric methods are used in conjunction with conventional survey ground control to develop topographic maps. Our photogrammetric partners are well versed in all aspects of topography, light detection and ranging (LIDAR), and corridor mapping.
